For this editorial design project, our mission was to imagine an artistic direction for the Miroirs collection by Éditions Allia. This fictional collection takes its name from its core concept: it consists exclusively of autobiographical texts, where authors recount their personal stories in the first person. It was therefore essential that our artistic direction reflect this intimate and introspective dimension.
Personally, I began by drawing inspiration from the name of the collection itself. We've all heard the saying, “the eyes are the mirror of the soul.” Another key idea for me was that in an autobiography, the author reveals themselves and the more we read, the more we uncover about them.
With that in mind, I envisioned book covers featuring cut-out eyes, offering multiple layers of information. The cover gives an overall glimpse, but as we turn the pages and delve deeper into the work, we discover more. The journey begins with an image that connects to the title, followed by a photograph of the author or key characters. Finally, we arrive at the innermost cut-out, the pupil, which leads us into the text itself, immersing us in the story.
I also imagined these eyes multiplying on the covers, symbolizing how much there is to learn from the book. The number of eyes reflects the number of significant figures in the narrative. The use of paper cut-outs is designed to spark curiosity and invite the reader to engage with the book at first glance.
